The right installation method depends on where the screen is going: between steel posts, onto a masonry wall, in a timber frame, or as a freestanding divider. The panel material matters too. Aluminum is light and corrosion-resistant, steel needs the right protective finish, and corten is designed to weather on its surface. Start by treating the screen as a fabricated architectural panel, not a piece of thin fencing that can be pulled tight and forgotten.

Plan the installation before ordering

The easiest screen to install is the one designed around its final location. Measure the opening in more than one place. Walls, existing fences, and posts are rarely perfectly square, especially on older properties. Record the narrowest width and shortest height, then allow for mounting hardware and expansion gaps.

Do not order a panel to fit hard against every edge. Metal moves slightly as temperatures change, and a screen needs room for water to drain and air to circulate. Corten steel requires a different mindset. Its weathered patina develops over time, and early runoff can stain nearby paving, render, or light-colored surfaces. Keep the bottom of the panel clear of absorbent materials, provide drainage, and allow for the natural weathering process in the design. Corten is not the right choice where rust-colored runoff would be unacceptable.

For galvanized, steel, and powder-coated panels, touch up any accidental scratches promptly with a compatible repair coating. Small damage is easier to manage when dealt with early. Avoid cutting or modifying a finished screen on site unless it has been specifically allowed for in the fabrication plan.
